Striking as Philosophy

At Applied Philosophy, we intend to master the ability to strike, as well as master a sound understanding of what striking is, metaphysically, spiritually, mentally, and experientially. The normative study of striking misses many of its most important aspects. With sound understanding, the Martial Artist is better positioned to know how to train, what to train specifically for each person, and what caveats to apply in training. We are not here simply to "do" things unthinkingly, but to understand them, as deeply as possible, so that what we "do" is infused with wisdom, insight, and intention which leads to efficacy.

The emptiness of modern Martial Arts

Fundamentally, Martial Arts in the modern era is broken. Living in the age of the firearm, mechanized war, the computer, and the other technologies which made hand to hand fighting redundant has reduced martial arts into traditional parodies of "martial artists who cannot fight" and "combat athletes" who can fight, but have no real concept of Martial Arts. We could say, there is art with no martial, and martial with no art, but seldom a balanced expression of Martial Art, the transformative practices of self refinement which through countless generations have brought maturity and means of inward reflection to people. Applied Philosophy, as a school, is dedicated to bridging the gap between the inward and outward, and seeks a renaissance of holistic Martial Art training, whereby our inward development is mirrored in our outward abilities, and the transformative realities of Martial Arts are once again practiced and understood as indispensable aspects of human cultivation.
